Areas of Study

All majors are educated in central areas of statistics and data science including statistical modeling, computational methods, linear models, and categorical data analysis. Majors then select courses based on their interests, choosing from courses in these areas:

  • Computational statistics
  • Bayesian statistics
  • Causal inference
  • Experimental design
  • Statistical Learning
  • Data Visualization

Requirements

Statistics and Data Science majors are required to take 12 courses, including:

  • MATH 135 (or MATH 133)
  • MATH 136
  • MATH 241
  • CSCI 131
  • STAT 231
  • STAT 232
  • STAT 375
  • STAT 376

In addition to the required courses, majors must take three elective courses, with at least one at the 300-level.

  • Students who have received a score of 4 or 5 on the AP Calculus AB exam, or a subscore of 4 or 5 on the AP Calculus BC Exam, will earn credit for MATH 135 and are advised to take MATH 136. Students will forfeit their credit if they opt to take MATH 133 or 135.

  • Students who receive a score of 4 or 5 on the AP Calculus BC exam will earn credit for MATH 136 and are advised to take MATH 241 (Multivariable Calculus). Students will forfeit their credit if they opt to take MATH 133, 135 or 136.

  • Students with a score of 4 or 5 on the AP Computer Science A exam earn one unit of credit for CSCI 131 Techniques of Programming. Students with AP Computer Science A credit will forfeit their AP credit if they opt to take either CSCI 131 or CSCI 110. A score of 4 or 5 on the AP Computer Science Principles exam will earn one unit of credit for CSCI 110.  This course does not count toward fulfilling the statistics and data science major requirements

  • Students who have received a score of 4 or 5 on the AP Statistics exam will earn one unit of credit for ECON 249 Statistics. Students will forfeit their AP credit if they opt to take any 100- or 200-level statistics course at the College

Students are required to take one of:

  • STAT 220
  • BIOL 275
  • ECON 149
  • ECON 249
  • PSYC 200
  • SOCL 226

Sample Courses

  • Linear Models
  • Categorical Data Analysis
  • Experimental Design
  • Bayesian Statistics
  • Probability Theory

Opportunities

Research

Research with faculty, both during the academic year and over the summer as part of Weiss Summer Science Research program.

Clubs & Organizations

Math and Computer Science Club sponsors student-centered events throughout the year, including a weekly tea and games. The Math and Computer Science Mentorship program pairs first-year students with junior and senior majors. The Student Chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) organizes social events and professional development opportunities that align with AWM’s goal to promote equitable opportunity and gender-inclusivity across the mathematical sciences.

Awards

The Rev. John J. MacDonnell Prize in Computer Science may be awarded to the outstanding computer science major in each graduating class. The selection is based on whether students have chosen challenging course programs, the grades they have earned in their courses and also takes into account any research projects they may have worked on and their plans after graduation.

Graduate Opportunity

The 3-2 Engineering Program with Columbia University or the Collaborative Accelerated Master’s Program with Worcester Polytechnic Institute provide the opportunity to combine the study of mathematics with training in engineering. Both engineering programs are open to students of all majors and class years. Advisors offer one-on-one guidance to connect you to the resources and tools that will enable you to achieve your individual career goals.
